Major Upgrade 8.3 to 10

1st timer, be gentle.
I have been using Joomla which has a really simple upgrade process. I am moving over to tiki as I like the all in one concept and the way the features operate.
I originally installed 8.3 from hostgator but decided it would be better to build the site on the latest version being 10.
the upgrade seems very complex virtually requiring a total rebuilt of all the work.
By following the instructions I did a new install and now it seems I have to re-enter all the articles, modify the theme, rebuild and add the user menu.
I am assuming I am missing something as it simply can't be this complicated.
Should I have used the old database, copied across the old theme etc but even then what about the menu etc.
I really want this to work but can't see me rebuilding at every major upgrade.
thanks

The upgrade should be simple.

Make a copy of the database (8.3)
Install a new Tiki (10.1)
During the install, point to the 8.3 database, Tiki will recognize that the data structure if of the old version, and will upgrade it all.

Best regards,

M ;-)

Thanks, I thought that may be the case, I should have checked with the forum first.
Can you reuse the theme, I have read that major updates can kill older themes.

Yes, any major upgrade can kill a theme, but most don't. It depends how much change / work there was. But this should only affect the look & feel, not your data (menus, articles, etc.)

The big changes, theme-wise were between:

  • 2 and 3 (general theme revamp)
  • 6 and 7 (module layout revamp)
  • And the next one is expected between 12 and 13, as we modernize to take advantage of modern browsers. See Version LifeCycle

So between 8.x and 10.x, there is no major change theme-wise. Re-using the theme will likely work. If it doesn't, it's likely a .tpl file, and not a .css, so a theme with fewer modified .tpl files (compared to the default) has a higher chance of not breaking.

Best regards,

M :-)

Thanks, it is a lot clearer now, I will plod on, I am excited by the opportunity Tiki offers for a few of the sites I am due to replace particularly the Wiki area and the ease of adding articles.
I am sure I will need to lean on the forum again and thank you for such a quick response
