Mail setup

My Tiki 12 installation runs on Windows 7, MySql, IIS and PHP. Took me about 8 hours to get setup, and I consider myself very technical. (did not use the MS installer option, installed everything manually, so I'm sure that was a lot of it right there.)

Anyways, everything is working great now, I love the massive amount of options built into Tiki. One item that I still haven't figured out is mail notifications.

What setup/service providers(if any) are other windows Tiki admins using in order to send out notifications? (I don't currently have any mail servers installed locally to my tiki server)

Thanks!

So still no luck. :-(

Has anyone else used Reachmail.net with their Tiki install?

I've got mine all setup and when I attempt to test from Admin > General Preferences Mail, I get "unable to send mail" on that page after I hit Save.

When I look at the Admin > Tiki Logs, it only says "mail error".

Is there a more detailed log located somewhere on the Tiki system that I'm missing?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

We had input the email as JJJ at JuuuGuuZ.com and now have changed it to jjj at juuguuz.com but can't find a way to send a test email to a user or admin.? Where do I find this option?

Mail Notifications: We assume user and member would be the same definition.

Event: A User registers (bunch of other drop down options) Are we to select applicable or are all there already applied? We left is at A User Registers.

Destination: User or mail? NO explanation is offered as to what's the difference? and default is user? We left is as user.

User: (input field) "myself" appears to be suggested. Again no help offered what is supposed to go here?
We input jjj at juuguuz.com the users email.

"note that a user is not notified of his own action"

Is this screen a user required input and or an admin required manual input for each user/member? I fear 1,000's of how to use this page questions or users will leave frustrated.

To change from PHP sendmail to SMTP, simply change the mail sender option from Sendmail to SMTP, then include your mail details. See the docs for details.

You can test the mail feature by using the Email to send a test mail to field, also on the Admin: General page. There is also an option to test your site's mail-sending capability during the installer.

Your references to "mail notifications" and "events" indicates that you're attempting to specify custom notifications. Sorry, I may have been confused as to what you're trying to accomplish.

If you're using a Windows server, I recommend using the Microsoft Web Platform installer.

Upon opening registration form we receive the following error message?

"Required features: feature_trackers, feature_ajax, wikiplugin_tracker. If you do not have the privileges to activate these features, ask the site administrator".

Still no email being received by the registrant! ALthough you say change email from php to SMTP may work there is no instruction as to where this change can be made or least I can not find it.

Thanks for the reply Rick! I have read all docs on this site pertaining to mail setup/notification. In my opinion, it's a bit weak with info surrounding Sendmail/SMTP functions. Just my opinion, not trying to piss anyone off. As I'm very much loving Tiki (especially interested in the Tiki Suite offerings!)

So this is kinda funny.

Yesterday I spun up a fresh Raspberry Pi with LAMP and Tiki 12. I did have to tweak the php.ini memory_limit = 256M in order to get it to not serve blank pages. Had to disable boot to GUI as well. Honestly, it's still slow serving Tiki pages, but it was a fun experiment for me, as this was my first foray into the crazy fun world of Linux and Pi! (I've been playing with MS servers for nearly 20 years; do not miss NT 3.5!!!).

Anyways, I setup my SMTP settings EXACTLY the same in the mail section of the Admin > General Preferences as my Windows server, Saved.... and my mail was sent successfully!!!

So yeah, frustrating that I can't figure out why Win7 Tiki can't send. I'm sure this has got you Linux guys chuckling.

;-)

Still hoping to resolve this issue though.

Hi Rick,

Thanx for guidance. From teh advanced panel there were many questions unanswered so I went to Bluehost my site host for guidance. 45 minutes later we have made their suggested changes and inclusions for SMTP change from PHP and saved it with a test email address included assuming that would send a test email. Also signed up a new user to test email by registration. Neither test or registration email has been received. We sent a test email from one of my email accounts to the test email address being used with tiki email and it works. So why is TIki email so bloody difficult to get functional?

I am now seriously concerned about the time required to make the balance of tikiwiki apps and plugins functional but I will give you guys one last chance to council me to resolve email not working on restration or test emails even on SMTP!

If we can't resolve the email problem there is just no point to testing the rest of the apps and I would have to give tikiwiki a rating of 0 and warn others to not waste your time as it looks nice but it doesn't work.

Sorry I have to break the thread but on your website forum page the left hand menu now lies over top of the reply button preventing reply to your specific response and takes one to your faqs page instead of a reply form.

Ican only assume the settings are correct as 45 minutes chatting with Bluehost reviewing the options and selecting them according to what I expect is correct. But I don't really know if they are correct and how would i e able to tell when much of the provided documentation on an input field simply repeats the name of the field or has no explanation of the drop downs within a field. So if there is no one at tiki that can make the email work then that's it for this cowboy..

Perhaps someone would look at the attachment I sent with the previous reply and this one (limit of one attachment per reply) as they are the choices for the input and confirm the setting are correct or which ones need be corrected and corrected to be what.

As for my checking logs for errors I wouldn't have a clue what it is I would be looking for. I do know the email used works fine in by way of sending it a test email and checking it at the host levels shows no Tiki registration or test related email.

Sorry, but this attachment doesn't show any of the mail settings; these are the newsletter settings.

Please verify that the following settings are correct on the Admin: General page:

  • Your sender email
  • The Mail sender option
  • All associated SMTP fields.

Alternatively, you can try setting everything back to PHP sendmail and testing. This would at least help determine if the issues is with your Tiki installation or with your mail only.

Finally, did you run the Tiki Check to confirm that your sever and host is compatible?

To find your mail logs, you'll need to contact your host.

I'm not sure, but this looks wrong to me. Shouldn't the mail sever be something like mail.yourdomain.com?

You should refer to their specific help files for details: https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/26

You're also missing the authentation, username, password, port, etc, as shown in the attached screen.

We now have had 3 people register as a test. Two of the 3 have received their activation email the 3rd has not. Can we expect only 60% of registrants will receive their confirm email?

The first registrant can edit the home/log in page wording and we don't want that. We've spent hours trying to find the fix for this so far we have failed.

We've assigned admin to receive an email for each email option and or addition to or changes to blogs and articles and pages but truely want the owner/publisher to receive these emails as well or instead of. We found the documentation on this to be very weak.

Our third registrant, after we changed the above email settings to "admin", can't make any of the left hand menu function. Related?

We haven't given up yet ... but we are close to giving up ... so what are the fixes for the above?

If you've confirmed that your Tiki is sending the mail, then the problem is on the receiver's side. Are they using a spam filter? Did they add your Tiki to their "accepted" list? Etc.

Check your permissions for the group. If you gave the group edit permission, they can edit the page, as expected. You may want to look at using Categories to make some pages editable.

You'll need to use Tiki's watch feature. Users can select what items they want to "watch."

Sorry, but I don't understand. You changed which option to "admin?" Anyone in the admin group should have full access to the Admin menu (I assume that's what you mean by "left hand menu").
