Upgrade 1.7.7 to 1.9 directly?

Will it be possible to upgrade from Tiki 1.7.7 directly to 1.9 when this becomes available, or will I have to go via 1.8 (1.8.3 I presume)?

Also, comments on this proposed upgrade procedure would be appreciated.

  1. Build Tiki version 1.7.7 on my local machine.
  2. Export database on live system running 1.7.7
  3. FTP database export to local system, and import to local Tiki 1.7.7 (giving result: local system is to all intents and purposes identical to live system)
  4. Install new Tiki version (1.9 if lucky, if not then 1.8 and then repeat appropriate steps for 1.9) on local following upgrade instructions.
  5. Test new version on local and make sure everything relevant works.
  6. Carefully note all upgrade steps and any problems encountered, along with the fixes
  7. Rebuild Tiki 1.7.7 on local machine
  8. Make live system inaccessible (using appropriate Tiki message)
  9. Backup all live Tiki files
  10. Backup live Tiki database
  11. Export database on live system running 1.7.7
  12. FTP database export to local system, and import to local Tiki 1.7.7 (giving result: local system is to all intents and purposes identical to live system)
  13. Install new Tiki version (1.9 if lucky, if not then 1.8 and then repeat appropriate steps for 1.9) on local following upgrade instructions, also applying any fixes discovered in the trial run.
  14. Test new version on local and make sure everything relevant works.
  15. Export local Tiki1.9 database
  16. Create new Tiki19 subdomain on live system
  17. Install Tiki1.9 on live system in Tiki19 subdomain
  18. Import Tiki1.9 database to Tiki19 subdomain installation
  19. Make sure everything works
  20. Rename subdomains so that old subdomain remains backed up and Tiki19 installation becomes live subdomain
  21. The site is live!
  22. If anything horrible goes wrong, restore back to 1.7.7 by renaming subdomains

Good to me

as usual when 1.9 goes final there will be a suitable UpgradeTo19 update.

Of course you will need to take care of the nasty UpgradeTo18 database upgrade scripts, fingers crossed that they work for you. Some people have had terrable problems.

Hi Joel,

A well thought out plan. Not so sure about the subdomains thing etc. But then again I don't use anyway. I usually stick to making sure I have a good tar backup of all files in the DOC_ROOT directory and a SQL database backup. This should be enough to restore your site in minutes.

Regarding the upgrade: the most difficult bit is always upgrading your database schema. This you must do by executing the different upgrade SQL scripts in consecutive and correct order. The rest is just copying the 1.9 Tiki files in place and possibly empty your smart cache.

Regards,

Pat.
