Once you have upgraded and cleared the templates_c caches the load will be slightly higher for a while whilst things start to get cached again.

Also Image Galleries could be a problem for server load in 1.8.x
Also check the loads to see if you werent being attacked by a googlebot ust at the same time as you upgraded.
