Creating a Publishable Document from Wikis

I'm experimenting with using Wikis to create a specification document (because Wiki allows multiple users to edit the document at once, built-in cross-referencing, etc). I think we can create the Wikis and build a structure for them to get them organized with a Table of Contents, but I would like to be able to go to the top of the structure and perform a single action that will:

  • Build the publishable document by walking the structure, slurping in the documents listed in the struct,
  • Annotate the Wiki Links with section cross-ref numbers(i.e. "ExampleWiki" would result in "ExampleWiki (section 1.2.3)" ),
  • Paginate the document, and
  • Display it to the user in a printable format (.pdf? .doc?)

Any ideas on how to get this done easily?

Tiki already supports a 'PDF-export' function although I am not sure it would exactly what you want. Have a look at it and try it out. Look for the small PDF icon above each Wiki page. If you would like to see this functionality enhanced then you would be best to log an official RFE (Request for Enhancement) on the Sourceforge site.

Pat.

At the very least I would like to be able to print out the entire Wiki structure - walk the tree structure and generate one combined document. Do you know if that is possible?

Yes I think so it you select all the Wiki pages when performing the export. I think you will have to select them one by one though.
