In tikiwiki 1.10, the next version, I added in a regular tikiwiki registration the possibility for a user to choose his group (list of groups selected for the admin)
In tikiwiki 1.9, it is possible to add groups when you do a batch upload of users
For other authentification method, I don't think it is possible yet.. What authentification method do you use?
You can try to use the assign_user_to_group or set_default_group function
