found the 'sum total' function and export in Advanced Options of a tracker when viewed in a wiki page (but export keeps giving me errors, will need to experiment more).
also found PluginTrackerList which has an excellent explanation of 'Sorting, Filtering and Pagination', or basically what I was looking for: filtering on time a time period like one month.
thought I thoroughly dug through everything before my previous post, but apparently not
