This idea might be an approach for bluearc21 but I am not sure if I understand your needs eyewell! Does this info need to connect to the groups profile or can it be stand alone?
Have you looked at the trackers as an option. I use these a lot for user info. They are extreamly versitial and very searchable. As well they can have perms assigned about who can view + edit ect.. The great thing is that you can have all your own custom fields. I am clearly a fan of trackers and use them for guestbooks, helpdesks, directories....
As well it seems that you can use a plug-in to extract the information from them. So you can put the info into a wiki page. (I have know idea how, YET)
